The Accidental Birth of a Legend: Gorilla Glue #4

In 2009, Joesy, a former crane operator, returned to cannabis cultivation after a 20-year hiatus. He joined the ICMag forum under the name “Grizz” and connected with growers Greyskull and Zoolander, who shared elite clones: Sour Dubb, Chem’s Sister (mislabeled as Chem D), and Chocolate Diesel. These clones became the foundation of his grow operation.

Accidental Pollination

Joesy’s garden included hybrids of Chem’s Sister x Sour Dubb, created by his late partner, Lone Watty. After a police scare, Joesy was forced to move his garden twice in two days, stressing the plants. The Chem’s Sis x Sour Dubb hybrids hermied, pollinating the entire room. Disappointed, Joesy gave away most of the weed, but his friend Mardogg saved some seeds.

The Birth of Gorilla Glue #4

A year later, Joesy and Mardogg grew the saved seeds, cautious of hermaphrodite traits. From a handful of seeds, they kept three females: GG1 (Sister Glue), GG2, and GG4 (Original Glue). Gorilla Glue #4 earned its name from its sticky resin, which “glued” scissors during trimming. GG1 remains closely guarded, while GG2 was lost over time.

A Legacy of Sharing

Joesy shared Gorilla Glue #4 freely with growers on ICMag, honoring the generosity of Greyskull and Zoolander. The strain quickly gained fame, winning 1st place at the 2014 High Times Cup in Michigan and LA. However, its popularity led to exploitation, with clones being sold for profit—something Joesy strongly opposed.

In 2020, he passed away while doing what he loved at the age of 66. Remembered as a humble and generous breeder, Joesy’s legacy lives on through Gorilla Glue #4, which continues to bring joy to growers and smokers worldwide.

The Name Game: A Sticky Situation

So, why Gorilla Glue? The story is as sticky as the strain itself. Legend has it that the resin from the first batch was so sticky it glued Joesy’s phone to his hand. This resemblance to the famous adhesive brand led to the original name.

However, the actual Gorilla Glue company wasn’t thrilled about sharing their name with a cannabis strain. This led to a legal battle, and the strain was officially renamed GG4 or Original Glue. But for many, it will always be Gorilla Glue in their hearts.

THCA: The Star of the Show
